Lead UI Designer (position open)

At Zimmerman & Zimmerman we constantly push ourselves to think differently and forge new data solutions in the humanitarian sector. By joining our team, you will work on the bleeding edge of data information products for visual design, data visualisation and user experience for guiding users in data rich systems for global and local organisations. You will be our new UI/UX lead and define a new visual signature based on our current design assets with your own unique flavour.

You will play a crucial role in understanding how data has become an essential asset in the minds of our clients and partners and how UX and UI play a defining role for analysing, transforming and visualising data for a data informed society.

You are that lead UI designer with hands-on experience who can produce end-to-end immersive interfaces throughout the entire data design workflow from mapping user journeys into flow diagrams, creating wireframes to high fidelity mockups, along with working alongside frontend to implement designs into bleeding edge data applications.

We are looking for a creative, highly motivated self-starter with attention to detail and an eye for beautiful, clean user interfaces. You regard the user/customer experience first and support your design decisions with best practices and data from usability tests or metrics.

You will be a key member of the design team collaborating closely with our data engineers, designers, business leadership, partners and customers in the humanitarian sector.

This position opens in July/August this year.

What you will be doing

  • Define a new design system based on existing assets for our services and projects
  • Collaborate with other engineers and stakeholders to deliver end-to-end projects and services in our office. Due to the nature of this work, remote work is not an option.
  • Apply business objectives into concepts and create flow diagrams, wireframes and mockups of intuitive user experiences.
  • Distill and visualize complex data sets and attributes into summarizing visual views.
  • Initiative to identify UX challenges to incorporate pattern-based solutions.
  • Define, create and improve the tools and processes that accelerate workflows for the developers.
  • Prototype and iterate designs to correct and optimise user flows
  • Proficiency throughout the entire design process from formulating high-level strategy to executing pixel-perfect mockups.

What we are looking for

  • At least 4 years of visual design experience and proven track record.
  • Strong portfolio of latest relevant work.
  • Solid understanding of User Centered Design and UX principles.
  • Expert-level experience creating user interface across devices with relevant tools like Sketch.
  • Understanding of HTML5, CSS3/SCSS Experience with git and version control is a pro.
  • Experience and understanding with Javascript for display and interaction of design
  • Creative ideas with problem solving mindset.
  • Ability to receive constructive criticism to ultimately improve the end result.
  • Take initiative and ownership of responsibilities and deliverables.
  • Relevant academic background.
  • Experience working within Agile is a plus.
  • Your English EF SET scoring ranks at least C1.

  • A nice desk in our office in Amsterdam,  where seven of us work (Jim, Taufik, Asim, Juan, Siem) and our remote team in Cyprus and Lithuania (Stefanos and Martynas, former interns!). We have a proper coffee machine, (herbal) tea and interesting conversations about data mapping, data vis and UX.
  • Flexible working hours as in starting that Daily Team call @10AM sharp. We are looking for a new team member who wants to join us for at least 4 days a week (32 hours).
  • A question-happy, communication-happy atmosphere. We all keep learning by doing, and we want you to learn with us. Ideas or challenges, we talk and try and solve them as a team. Slack, fun, hard work. Not too many meetings.
  • If you travel by public transport outside of Amsterdam, we’ll cover the costs.
  • Salary range in between €47.500 and €57.500 gross per year depending on your experience. 25 vacation days and 8% holiday allowance.

We provide data services to Governments, The UN family, The Global Fund, Dutch municipalities and foundations. 10:00 daily sync with our team in Amsterdam, Cyprus and Lithuania.

We build and maintain the open-source data-engine OIPA (https://www.oipa.nl/home) which enables raw XML data to be transformed into a normalised datastore, enabling our clients and partners to access over USD150 billion of development aid data annotated in the IATI XML Standard (http://iatistandard.org/ ).
